Third Generation Social Work Genogram: A Case Study of Gaza's Patriarchal Society

In many societies around the world, patriarchal systems are still prevalent, where men hold more power than women. Gaza is one such society where men are considered the final decision-makers and have authority over women within the family. This paper will explore a personal experience of growing up in such an environment through the lens of a genogram. The term 'genogram' refers to a visual representation of a person's family history, including their relationships with their parents, siblings, spouse, and children.

My genogram is a third-generation social work genogram that highlights the conflicts and forms of violence I experienced within my own family due to cultural norms. As a woman in Gaza, it was evident from an early age that men held more power than women, and this was reflected in my family dynamics. My brothers and their wives often perpetrated violence against me for cultural reasons, which had a significant impact on my life and shaped my personality.

My genogram includes four generations: the first generation consists of my parental and maternal grandparents who passed away when I was young; the second generation comprises my parents and their siblings (my uncles and aunts from both sides); the third generation includes me and my seven siblings, as well as their spouses; and the fourth generation represents the number of children they have.

In my family, certain characteristics are prevalent due to nature, such as Heart Disease, Cancer, Diabetes, High Blood Pressure, Arthritis, and Depression. These health issues run on both sides of my family, with my father's side being more affected. My relationships with some members of my extended family were strained, particularly with one of my uncles who still lives in our house and has been violent towards me in the past.

My experience growing up in a patriarchal society has taught me the importance of social work genograms as a tool for understanding and addressing the complex issues that arise within families. By examining the relationships between family members, including their dynamics and conflicts, we can gain insight into the ways in which societal norms and cultural expectations shape our lives.

In conclusion, my third-generation social work genogram is a personal reflection of the challenges I faced growing up in Gaza's patriarchal society. It highlights the importance of considering the role that culture and family dynamics play in shaping our experiences and identities. As social workers, it is essential to recognize the significance of genograms as a tool for understanding and addressing the complex issues that arise within families, particularly in societies where patriarchal systems are prevalent.
